wind behind the rain

viii. wind behind the rain

estefaaano_writes

-

i knew you before we met.

you're mouth a bruise i dreamt.

i know no answers yet.

time surely gnaws me hollow,

you see my ribs,

the man i've become.

so much left to figure out.

no easy path, boots fused to my soles.

roots of rubber growing in my soul.

will you peel em off when i'm all ash?

i love you like the morning loves the afternoon,

like the prairies love the plains.

run and i'll hunt you through the storm,

i'll be the wind behind the rain.

i want to see you smiling when you're ninety.

to always see you like you are right now.

wild beginnings clot behind my eyes.

we'll choke through it somehow.

i wanted you the first time that i saw you

on that rooftop where friends left me behind.

no hook; you snagged each of my veins.

your picture stitched inside my brain.

i love you like the ocean drinks the silver moon,

like Noah and Allie loved through time and memory.

if you leave me now,

i'll look for you through towns.

i'll be the wind behind the rain.

my gust dogs your shadows,

the one that won't let you forget.

love asks nothing.

it takes your breath.

strips apology down to death.

i knew you before our first words.

and i'll know you 'til our grave shuts cold.

This is the first time poetry hasn't felt 'fake' to me.

you don't see the wind; you see the rain moving because of it.

The Noah and Allie reference... you’re really trying to make us all cry today, aren't you? 😭
