if it weren't for the wind

if it weren't for the wind

estefaaano_writes

-

i ain't no heartbreaker by trade,

but i've said my share of goodbyes.

i could make a promise,

spit in the dirt by dawn -

mind changed like a prairie squall.

i’m going where the weather wants me to.

let it chart my course to sagebrush seas.

even i, don't know when my boots hit dust.

if it were a different time,

maybe that train would never stop.

no dust devils churning gravel drives,

tumbleweed kin rolling horizon-bound

through every scorched sunrise.

maybe i'd settle down.

roots might claw caliche soil.

silos stand sentinel to a farmhouse.

maybe i wouldn't vanish into barbed wire dawns...

if it weren't for the wind.

i wouldn't spend my nights

wondering what's out there.

wings could rust grounded.

merely , the wind scours bone-dry,

carrying me across the wide open.

white lines fevered, tires smoking,

and it's always the rearview i'm looking in...

because of the wind.

i was born with restlessness in my bones,

leaving tattooed in every vein.

some men anchor to hearths and haylofts.

i was made for the wind.

I can feel the grit of the gravel drive and the heat of the scorched sunrise in these lines.

Maybe I’d settle down... if it weren’t for the wind.
That's the ultimate excuse and the ultimate truth.

some men anchor to hearths, but some of us were just made for the wind. Thank you for making us feel seen, estefaaano_writes.
